Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder - Powerful search engine that finds images that look the same
Nothing is worth doing manually on your PC when there's software for it. It can't do everything for you, but Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder can find duplicate on your hard drive using parameters that won't leave any file unturned.
Trying it out requires you to download a 2.39 Mb installation kit and run it. The wizard won't slow you down with anything. In under a minute you can have the program up and running.
The interface is loaded with easy to find check boxes and buttons. There's only two top menus, the first containing options available on the main window and the second is a help menu which plagues any software.
Finding duplicates is a bit more complex than a few clicks here and there. There's quite a number of parameters available to make the search more streamlined. The larger part of the window features a list where your results will be displayed. Underneath it you can make some settings, for an auto check feature, like search images with smaller dimensions, smaller files sizes if dimensions are equal and other options involving these parameters. Next to this area you can choose what should be done when the program finds those pesky duplicates. You can choose to delete or move them all to a different location.
In the bottom right area of the window you can choose a scanning method like finding identical images, check the files by their size or do a visual comparison. A bit odd is the fact that for some options, you can find two buttons on the interface doing the same thing. Adding a folder can be done either by clicking the designated button on the top toolbar, or in the upper right area where you can also find a "remove folder" button. The giant "start scan" button from the bottom right side also has a tween in the top toolbar.
You can still resume to just loading a file and clicking the huge "start scan" button without concerning yourself with all the parameters. The program will scan that folder and will display the groups of duplicates in the main area of the window. Clicking each result will show you a side by side comparison of the selected image and another one from the group. The percentage of similarity will be displayed as a tiny, colored bar next to the results in the main list so you can get a better idea of how much they resemble one another. You can also set a similarity filter above the start button. It's a small field where you can type your own desired percentage. While scanning, the program will ignore images that are below that percentage of similarity you have set.
If you know that a certain image has a double somewhere on your hard drive, you can click the search button on the top toolbar. This will bring up a window where you can target the image and the program will search the whole drive for copy cats.
Pros:
Although loaded, the interface makes scanning for duplicates easy and flexible.
Cons:
Some features, like auto or quick check, are unavailable in the trial version.
No image duplicate will escape Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder. It doesn't look for files with the same name or size. It finds images that look the same and it lets you see for yourself before deciding their fate.
